Filipinos Making an Impact
in the United States
Celebrate Filipino American History Month (FAHM) with Mabuhay Credit Union by letting your creativity shine, while learning more about Filipino American History, by participating in our FAHM Poster Making Contest!
Did you know that the history of Filipinos in the United States pre-dates the arrival of the Mayflower by 3 decades, and that the first permanent Filipino settlement in the US was founded well before the country gained its independence? The so called ‘Luzones Indios” became the first Filipinos to make landfall in what is now Central California’s Morro Bay on October 18, 1587,
over 33 years before the Pilgrims landed at Cape Cod, Massachusetts! Furthermore, Filipino sailors and indentured servants known as "Manilamen" established a settlement in Saint Malo, Louisiana from as early as 1763 – 1765.
