3 Great Local Excursion and Vacation Ideas to Consider

With Southern California being one of the country's most popular vacation destinations, those of us who live out here have an abundance of staycation and weekend getaway options that are driving distances from our homes.

Whether it's for a day, weekend, or longer, here are some local excursion and vacation ideas to consider:

Be a tourist for a day…or two. Our Golden State offers many tourist destinations that people will fly from all over the country to visit. You can beat some of the crowds by visiting these locations during the week or by going after Labor Day, once most schools have gone back into session. For example, head to Hollywood and reserve an open-air, sightseeing tour from a company such as Access Hollywood.

Go camping, rent a cabin, or stay in a yurt. Southern California is full of opportunities to relax in nature. While some places book months in advance, some lesser-known destinations are just as nice and easier to find available. For example, Palomar Mountain State Park, located in San Diego County, has nearly 2,000 acres of forested trails that offer hiking, camping, fishing, and scenic coastal vistas. Right outside of the state park is privately-owned, Bailey’s on Palomar Lodging, which offers camping, glamping, and lodging.

Explore with the Metrolink. You can leave your car, take a break from traffic and not worry about parking when you take the Metrolink. Many LA-commuters take the Metrolink for work, but for those of us who live or work elsewhere, we never "hop on." The Metrolink can be a fun and convenient way for families to experience places such as Chinatown, Olvera Street, and Hollywood Boulevard. You can go anywhere on weekends for only $10 with the Weekend Day Pass, and kids 17 and under ride for free.
