5 Fresh Ways to Cook with Pears, Apples, and Pumpkin

Pumpkin with apples and pears beside a wicker basket on a wooden table, a warm autumn still life.

Fall produce is showing off, and honestly, we should let it.

Pears are juicy, apples are crisp, pumpkin is everywhere, and all three can do a lot more than sit in a pie. They can also make dinner feel more fun. Let kids build their own flatbreads or quesadillas, set out toppings for a mix-and-match meal, or serve a few smaller dishes together for an easy fall dinner party.

You don't need much special equipment either. A sheet pan, skillet, blender, or slow cooker can handle most seasonal recipes, and a few serving boards or small bowls can make even a casual meal feel festive.

Pear and Prosciutto Flatbread

Spread ricotta over naan or flatbread, then add thin pear slices and torn prosciutto. Bake until the edges crisp, then finish with arugula and balsamic glaze.

Tip: Use a slightly firm pear so it holds its shape while baking.

Apple Cheddar Quesadillas

Layer thin apple slices and sharp cheddar between tortillas. Cook in a skillet until golden and melty, then serve with mustard or hot honey.

Tip: Tart apples give the rich cheddar an especially good contrast.

Pumpkin Alfredo Bowls

Warm pumpkin puree with butter, garlic, Parmesan, milk, and a pinch of nutmeg. Toss with pasta until creamy, then finish with black pepper.

Tip: Add crispy sage, roasted broccoli, or toasted pepitas for extra texture.

Pear and Goat Cheese Harvest Salad

Toss arugula with sliced pears, goat cheese, toasted pecans, and balsamic vinaigrette. Add dried cranberries for another burst of sweetness.

Tip: Toast the pecans first. A few minutes brings out much more flavor.

Warm Cinnamon Apples

Cook sliced apples in a skillet with butter, cinnamon, and a little maple syrup until tender. Spoon them over oatmeal, pancakes, yogurt, or vanilla ice cream.

Tip: Make a double batch and keep the extras in the refrigerator for breakfast.

Fall cooking does not have to mean cinnamon in everything. Pears can go savory, apples can get cheesy, and pumpkin can absolutely claim dinner. Pick a favorite, invite someone into the kitchen, and have some fun with the bountiful harvest!
